The difficulty, while it can be hard at times, is always fair. With everything about Kena: Bridge of Spirits being top quality, I was wondering what aspect of it suffered to make the rest of the game so awe-inspiring. Some tweaking can be done in the audio menu, I don’t think I ever got it just right. At some points throughout the game, the music would greatly overpower the dialogue and it took me out of the narrative a bit. While I am head-over-heels with the game’s audio, one thing I found a little unfortunate were some of the sound levels felt a little unbalanced. I also found Sam Cavallaro and Joshua Vincent’s performances as Saiya and Beni, respectively, rather impressive as they are both pretty young, yet their performances carried so much weight. Kena’s voice was provided by Dewa Ayu Dewi Larassanti, the daughter of Emiko Susilo, and I couldn’t believe Kena is her first-ever professional voicing gig. I found the voice acting to be solid, especially considering a lot of the cast are newcomers to the voice acting field. Overall, the score and audio ambiance contributed a great deal to how full and vibrant the world feels. Susilo’s vocals can be heard throughout the game’s soundtrack, including my favorite track “Befriending Spirits.” I found the soundtrack was very reminiscent of Studio Ghibli films while also doing something totally different. Originally wary of contributing their culture’s music to a video game, the group’s lead singer, Emiko Susilo, was won over after seeing the game and talking to the dev team. ![]() ![]() The game features an incredible score composed by Jason Gallaty through a rare collaboration with the Balinese ensemble Gamelan Çudamani. Kena: Bridge of Spirits boasts an auditory experience that absolutely rises to meet the expectations set by the visuals. That being said, while the Pixar comparison is strong, this game is also very reminiscent of the movies from Laika Studios ( Kubo, Coraline, Paranorman). Kena gave me big Kubo and the Two Strings vibes, and that’s not a complaint as that’s one of my favorite animated movies. From Kena, to the adorable Rots, to the corrupted enemies, to Kena’s allies, the game featured amazing-looking designs. One of my favorite things that sold me on the game initially was the character design. The forests especially had such a warm atmosphere that was conveyed perfectly, and even the corrupted areas, while pretty dead, were visually pleasing. The gameplay, while having the typical graphical glitches, was unlike anything I’ve seen from such a small indie team. With the cutscene animation being so stunning, I was worried about how the gameplay visuals would look by comparison, but I soon found out I had nothing to worry about. I was absolutely blown away at the quality of the animation. The incredible animation during the cutscenes was done by Sparx, a Vietnamese animation studio, and it’s honestly on the same level as Pixar. The short video offered us a look at what we could expect from the game’s visuals, and now that I’ve experienced the game, it looks even better than I expected.
